Community Centre

For over four decades, the Knocknagoshel Community Centre has stood as the proud beating heart of our parish. While today it serves as a modern hub for youth activities, the Over 55s Social Club, and vibrant local meetings, its story begins with an incredible act of community spirit and determination.
A Centre Built by the People, for the People
In the late 1970s, our community faced a challenge: we needed a proper social outlet and gathering space, but funding was scarce. Refusing to wait for government grants, the people of Knocknagoshel took matters into their own hands.
Through relentless door-to-door fundraising, parish raffles, and tireless volunteer labor, the community rallied together. By 1980, the dream became a reality when the doors of the Knocknagoshel Community Centre officially opened.

A cherished photograph from that opening year captures the 1980 Carnival Committee standing proudly right outside the newly completed hall. These local heroes didn't stop once the bricks were laid; they ran massive summer festivals and carnivals to completely clear the building's debts and ensure its future. That photograph stands as a timeless testament to what our parish can achieve when we work hand in hand.

The immense effort paid off instantly. The hall quickly earned a reputation for its fantastic capacity and warm atmosphere. This culminated in 1988 when the centre hosted the legendary 19-night run of the pageant Massabielle. Produced by Fr. Pat Ahern and featuring a cast of over 70 locals, the production drew audiences from all over Ireland and even featured on RTÉ television news.

A new era of community leadership began when the Knocknagoshel Community Centre Committee formally incorporated on May 29, 2008, ushering in decades of expanded programming and modernization. Today, the centre stays bustling day and night with an impressive variety of cultural and wellness activities:
Drama & Stage Production: The hall proudly rings out with rehearsals as the Knocknagoshel Spike Players drama group prepare for their major stage plays. The centre also partners with the Fiona Crowley Stage School to deliver drama classes and live youth performances.
The Over 55s & Women’s Group: The dedicated Knocknagoshel Over 55s Social Club and Women’s Group operates a vital Day Club on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. They provide local meals-on-wheels, day trips, and social meetups, backed by local fundraisers like "Share the Bucket".
Concerts & Festivals: Thanks to recent upgrades from the Dromadda Beg Wind Farm fund, the building boasts state-of-the-art sound equipment that hosts live musical events, historical book launches, and the annual Body and Mind: Philosophy Festival organized by Tidy Towns.
Youth & Sports: The venue hosts local Foróige Youth Club nights and fitness programs such as Pilates, alongside indoor sports featuring custom-installed soccer and badminton posts.
